Pit Furnace Detail

Gas Carburising Pit Furnace

This electrically heated gas carburising furnace was installed at Land Rover for heat treating front and rear axle half-shafts. It was supplied along with an aqua-quench system and 2 tempering furnaces.

These furnace were fitted in the same pit that we constructed for their axle heat treatment line in the early eighties.

This furnace has a specially graded element system to account for different levels for heat input required at different heights in the furnace chamber.

The lid is lifted by a davit arm that runs up the back of the furnace, which is ran through heavy duty bearings so that the whole assembly can be pivoted to one side.

The fan motor that can be seen in the centre of the lid has a water cooled shaft. This allow the fan to be used at upto 10000C.
